Few laundry problems feel as helpless as lifting the lid to find your clothes swimming in a tub that won't drain, or a load that finishes soaking wet because the machine never spun. Spinning and draining are closely linked, so a failure in one often points to the other. Before you assume the worst, work through these checks. Many spin-and-drain problems come down to balance, a clog, or a switch, not a dead machine.
Rule Out Load Balance and Lid Switches
Modern washers refuse to spin if they think something is unsafe. The two most common triggers are an unbalanced load and a lid or door that isn't registering as closed. A heavy item like a comforter or a tangle of towels can shift to one side and throw the drum off balance; the machine senses the wobble and stops spinning to protect itself.
Open the lid, redistribute the load evenly around the drum, and try again. If it still won't spin, suspect the lid switch on a top-loader or the door latch on a front-loader. Press the switch by hand with the lid open and listen for a click. If you hear nothing, the switch may have failed, which tells the machine the lid is open and blocks the spin cycle entirely.
Check the Drain Hose and Pump Filter
If water is standing in the tub, the drain path is the place to look. First, inspect the drain hose at the back of the machine. It should run without sharp kinks and loop up before entering the standpipe. A crushed or bent hose stops drainage cold. Also make sure the hose isn't pushed too far down into the standpipe, which can create a siphon.
Next, find the pump filter, common on front-loaders, usually behind a small access panel at the bottom front. Lay down towels, because water will spill. Unscrew the filter and pull out what's trapped: coins, hairpins, lost socks, buttons, and lint are the usual suspects. A clogged filter will keep a machine from draining no matter how healthy the pump is.
Look at the Drain Pump Itself
If the hose is clear and the filter is clean, the drain pump may be jammed or failing. With the machine unplugged, you can often access the pump and check the impeller for a foreign object wedging it in place, like a small sock or a shard of plastic. A pump that hums but moves no water, or one that's silent when it should run, is likely worn out.

Consider the Drive Belt and Motor Coupler
If the machine drains fine but won't spin, the problem may be mechanical. Many washers use a drive belt that can wear, stretch, or slip off its pulley over time; when it does, the motor runs but the drum doesn't turn. Direct-drive top-loaders instead use a motor coupler, a small plastic-and-rubber part designed to fail before the motor does, protecting the more expensive component. Both are visible once the cabinet or rear panel is removed, and a broken or shredded one is easy to spot.
When It's Time to Call a Pro
You can safely rebalance loads, clean filters, clear hoses, and inspect belts. Where it makes sense to stop is at replacing the pump, motor coupler, control board, or wiring, especially anything involving the machine's electronics or motor. Before calling, run a spin cycle and note exactly what happens: Does it drain but not spin? Spin but not drain? Make an unusual noise? Write down your model number too. The clearer your description, the faster the diagnosis, and the less time you'll spend waiting on soggy laundry.
