Garbage Disposal Humming, Jammed, or Dead? The 10-Minute Fixes

The garbage disposal has a flair for drama — it quits mid-dinner-cleanup, usually with an ominous hum. The good news: it has the highest do-it-yourself rescue rate of any appliance in your kitchen. Try these before anything else.

If it hums but doesn't spin: it's jammed

That hum is the motor straining against something stuck — a fruit pit, a bottle cap, a stray spoon. Turn the switch off first. Never put your hand in the chamber. Under the sink, look for a small hex socket in the very center of the disposal's bottom. Insert a 1/4" hex (Allen) key and work it back and forth a few turns — you're manually freeing the plate. Fish out the debris with tongs, run cold water, and try again.

If it does absolutely nothing: try the reset button

Disposals have a built-in overload protector that trips when the motor overheats or jams. It's a small (usually red) button on the bottom of the unit. Push it until it clicks and stays in. If it immediately pops back out, wait ten minutes and try once more.

Then check the breaker

Still nothing? Check your electrical panel — disposals share circuits in some kitchens and a tripped breaker is a two-second fix.

What should never go in it

• Grease and oils (they solidify into clogs downstream)
• Coffee grounds and eggshells (sediment sludge)
• Fibrous scraps — celery, corn husks, onion skins (they wrap the blades)
• Starchy loads — big batches of potato peels or rice (paste)

When it's a real failure

If the reset trips repeatedly, the unit leaks from the body, or it spins but no longer grinds, the motor or the assembly is at end of life — disposals typically last 8–12 years. That's a claim, not a project: file it, pay the flat service fee, and a licensed pro handles the replacement.
