When one burner on an electric range stays cold while the others heat, the problem is usually isolated to that burner's element, its connection, or its switch. A simple swap test can tell you a lot in two minutes, and several causes are things you can check yourself before calling anyone.
Most Common Causes, Most Likely First
- A loose or dirty element connection (coil ranges). The plug-in coil can seat poorly in its receptacle, or the contacts corrode, breaking the circuit.
- A burned-out heating element. Coils and the elements under a glass top eventually fail, often with a visible blister, break, or scorch mark.
- A faulty infinite switch. The switch behind the control knob regulates power to the burner and is a very common failure point.
- A bad receptacle or wiring. The socket the coil plugs into can burn or corrode.

- Do the swap test. On a coil range, unplug the dead coil and plug a known-good coil of the same size into that spot. If the good coil heats, the original element is bad. If it stays cold, the receptacle or switch is the problem.
- Reseat the coil. Pull the suspect coil out and push it firmly back in. Look at the metal contacts for corrosion or black burn marks.
- Inspect the element. Look for blisters, cracks, or a broken spot on a coil, or bubbling under a glass top. Visible damage means it needs replacing.
- Check the breaker. Confirm the range breaker has not tripped, especially if more than one burner is out.
- Clean glass-top surfaces. On a smooth top, make sure no spilled residue is insulating the pan from the surface.

If the swap test points to the receptacle or the infinite switch, stop there. Both sit behind the control panel and carry the high current an electric range draws, so replacing them means working with 240-volt wiring. A burned receptacle in particular is a shock and fire risk. Glass-top elements are also wired inside the cooktop and are not a plug-in swap.
