AC Won't Turn On? Check These 7 Things First

Before calling for service, walk through seven common reasons your air conditioner won't turn on, from thermostats to tripped breakers.

An air conditioner that refuses to come on during a heat wave is stressful, but a dead AC does not always mean a dead system. A surprising number of no-start problems come down to a tripped switch, a dead battery, or a safety device doing exactly its job. Before you schedule service, spend fifteen minutes walking through these seven checks in order. Many homeowners find the fix themselves, and even if you do not, you will be able to tell the technician what you have already ruled out.

Start With the Thermostat

It sounds obvious, but the thermostat is the brain of the system and a common point of failure. Check three things. First, make sure it is set to cool, not off or heat, and that the target temperature is set several degrees below the current room temperature so it actually calls for cooling. Second, if it is a battery-powered thermostat, replace the batteries. A dying thermostat battery is one of the most common reasons an AC goes silent, and people overlook it constantly. Third, look at the screen. If it is blank, the thermostat has lost power, which points you toward the electrical checks below.

Check Your Electrical Panel and Switches

Air conditioners draw a lot of power, and a startup surge or a fault can trip a breaker. Open your electrical panel and look for a breaker that has flipped to the middle or off position. To reset it, push it fully to off first, then back to on. If it trips again immediately, stop and call a professional, because a breaker that will not stay set signals an electrical fault you should not keep resetting.

Two more switches trip people up:

  • Many homes have a separate shutoff switch near the outdoor unit or on the wall beside the furnace or air handler. It looks like a regular light switch. Someone may have flipped it off. Make sure it is on.
  • The furnace or air handler often has its own power switch nearby. The indoor and outdoor units work together, so if the indoor side is off, the whole system may not run.

Look at the Condensate Drain and Float Switch

Your AC pulls humidity out of the air, and that water drains away through a line. If that line clogs with algae or debris, water backs up. Most modern systems have a float switch in the drain pan that shuts the whole system off when water rises, so it does not flood your home. This is a safety feature, not a malfunction. Check the drain pan under your indoor unit. If it is full of water, your drain line is clogged. You can often clear it by attaching a wet-dry vacuum to the outdoor end of the drain line to suck out the blockage. Once the water drains and the float switch drops, the system should power back up.

Inspect the Outdoor Unit and Air Filter

Head outside to the condenser unit. Is anything running or humming? Clear away leaves, grass clippings, and debris that may have packed into the fins or jammed the fan. While you are troubleshooting, also pull your indoor air filter. A severely clogged filter can cause the system to overheat and shut down on a safety limit, and it can freeze the coil, which stops cooling entirely. A clean filter is cheap insurance and rules out a whole category of problems.

The Last Two Checks Before You Call

If the system still will not start, look at these:

  1. A tripped safety near the unit. Some systems have a reset button on the motor or a GFCI outlet nearby that has tripped. Press the reset and check any nearby outlet.
  2. A blown low-voltage fuse. The control board inside the air handler often has a small automotive-style fuse that protects the thermostat wiring. If it is blown, the thermostat goes dark and nothing runs. This is a quick fix for a technician but usually beyond a comfortable DIY job.

If you have worked through all seven and the unit is still dead, the problem is likely a failed capacitor, contactor, compressor, or control board, all of which need a qualified technician.
